This apartment, situated on Hubert Street in TriBeCa, dates back to 1892 and has been remodeled by ODA New York.
Located on a cobblestone road in TriBeCa stands an 1892 building, originally designed by Julius Kastner to get a liquor retailer, and later taken over by a pistachio baron. As a conservation project, the aim behind 10 Hubert Street was going to return the space to its initial layout, but still station TriBeCa’s atmosphere. Aside to the interior brick walls being intact, the rest of the dilapidated building left little to mention.
The restored facades of Hubert and Collister Street contain the foliate moldings, cornices, and arched windows. A minimum color palette is used and the first attributes are kept, but updated. A steel catwalk with glass flooring is attached to the walls of this double-height living area and allows to get a canning library. The Romanesque Revival building’s first fire escape was eliminated and re-installed with steel fire shutters to match the first character of this Collister street facade. In the end, the original wooden ceiling beams were revived. An addition of a 1,000 square foot rooftop penthouse is left imperceptible to pedestrians, respecting the historical community. This inclusion is clad with standing seam steel and zinc windows, wooden doors, and steel railings. 10 Hubert outlines as a restored and conserved bit of structure, using an unintrusive new link to outside urban living.
