Relaxed and Open Apartment With a Sense of Drama
Cleveland Rooftop in Australia, designed by SJB.
This rooftop addition to the first Demco Machinery construction is a new construction spanning between two initial rooftop components: the goods elevator enclosure and overrun (currently the master bedroom and research) and the emergency escape stair (currently bedroom 3).
The strategy architecturally was to realise that a backyard that you happened to reside in, as opposed to an apartment surrounded by greenery. The private backyard draws on and complements the adjoining communal roof garden, while providing one private oasis dwelling. Compared to the tropical garden, the private garden is predominantly indigenous, creating an oasis for native birds and insects of town. This small part of landscape in the skies intends to bring about the opportunistic community of small inner city indigenous landscape areas and public parks which provide respite for fauna.
Internally the apartment is organised around links to the sky. Numerous skylights punctuate the plan, providing light to the entrance lobby, bathrooms and internalised corridor. Additionally, a deep cut inside the living room punctuates the plan, bringing the landscape to the house — helping to dissolve the interior/exterior interface.
While the personal sleeping areas of the house are formal, the living spaces are open and relaxed. This strategy was utilized to create a sense of play into the dwelling and to allow simple compartmentalisation to guarantee privacy when multiple generations are seeing.
